UK working visa
There are a variety of visas that you can apply to depending on your personal circumstances and what your purpose is for when you visit.
We look at two of those choices below which we hope will be of most relevance to you.
The Working holidaymaker;
A United Kingdom working visa is commonly referred to as the working holidaymaker scheme which allows eligible nationals from participating Commonwealth countries, British overseas citizens, British overseas territories citizens, or British nationals (overseas). This includes passport holders of Australia and New Zealand.
The scheme is primarily aimed to those who are aged between 17 and 30 to come to the United Kingdom for a holiday of up to two years. This particular visa allows you to work but the primary reason for your stay must be that you are travelling and paid employment is only a minor part of your visit. Therefore a restriction is in place on the number of hours and the amount of pay you can earn per year.
Currently you are entitled to a maximum stay of 2 years of which you are only allowed to work for 12 months of the 2 years.
This type of visa is ideal for those who want to earn some money to support themselves or gain work experience while they travel and is suited for those seeking temporary or casual employment.
You must apply for this type of visa before entry to the UK and can be done through the nearest British embassy, High Commission or Consulate.
The cost of this visa as of 2008 is £205.
The Highly Skilled worker (tier 1 general)
As a highly skilled worker you have to apply under the points-based system to work in the United Kingdom.
You do not require a job offer to apply under the highly skilled worker category.
When you apply you are awarded points based on your qualifications, previous earnings, United Kingdom experience, age, English language skills, and available maintenance (funds). If you have the minimum number of points currently 75 you can apply for permission to enter the United Kingdom (known as 'entry clearance') under the highly skilled worker category from outside the UK.
You must provide biometric details and the application process is quite long and extensive, however with this visa you get an extra degree of flexibility in terms of looking and finding a job and you have the option of extending your stay when your visa expires.
This visa can be obtained through your nearest British embassy, High Commission or Consulate but parts of the application will require you to post your details to immigration offices in the UK and use their website to submit other details.
The cost of this visa is currently £600.
