London Taxies - The Knowledge
The London black cab is a common sight on the capitals road, a British icon in design it serves as one of the most reliable modes of transport in getting from A to B.
Cabs that are available for hire will have their light switched on top with the words “TAXI”, if the light is not on then this will usually imply that the driver is not looking for passengers and will not stop.
There are around 500 taxi stands around London where you can hire one, otherwise hailing a cab can be simple to, when you see one coming towards you with the light on simply stick your arm out as it approaches and they will pull over if it’s safe to do so. You may have to try several times before one can stop and it helps if you are standing somewhere where it is safe for the driver to pull over.
The typical Black Cab can carry five passengers and should have ample space to put any luggage you may have.
The fare is more expensive then other methods of transport but what makes the London cabbie special is that all the drivers have to take the “Knowledge exam”.

Black Cab drivers are renowned for their expertise for all things London and can be a great point of call for information and directions, while transporting you to your port of call safely you are almost guaranteed some friendly banter. “Most of us [cab drivers] know the local history of a variety of places, probably better then the tour guides so not only do you get driven around you get to learn facts that can be handy for the pub quiz two for the price of one” Steven Dawe London cabbie for the past 18 years.
If you are looking for a cheaper option, licensed minicabs are your best bet however you have to pre-book with a time and pick point and you can not hail them from the road.
